THE implications of the contents of WikiLeaks for Pakistan’s national security and foreign policy need to be evaluated. It is imperative to undertake appropriate counter measures to ensure damage control and maintain correct direction. Different type of propaganda techniques have been used by WikiLeaks against the target countries including Pakistan. The methodology clearly classifies these leaks as new species of psychological warfare, which is an outcome of some well-established intelligence network, with state of the art information collection mechanism. At the same time, it is also a multi-edged weapon that will set many players into spin on the political chess-board. It will also go a long way in fomenting mistrust and reality checks. We need to focus on the real motives of the actual players and the inhibition that may cast its impact on Pakistan in the long run. Misleading contents of Wikileaks are painting a bleak picture of Pakistan’s efforts in GWOT, not taking into account sacrifices rendered by the nation that is paying heavy price to fight terrorism. Our security forces are playing a pivotal role in maintaining law and order while precious lives are being sacrificed to fight militancy. Pakistan needs encouragement to fight the menace of terrorism, rather than subjecting her with sarcastic criticism. International media has frequently been propagating against Pakistan security forces/Law Enforcing Agencies to fight terrorism.
Human rights (HR) violations frequently occur in India. State officials involved in crimes against the oppressed Indian people are honoured with promotions and perks. Unfortunately Amnesty International and NGOs do not find an easy access to uncover these issues. Mostly Indian media misguides international HR organizations. Indian politicians use bribery as a weapon to bury these issues. Resultantly HR violations are getting widespread with no hope for the sufferers. Hence there is a dire need to suitably project HR violations in India. This may prompt the WikiLeaks to uncover facts. Pakistani media needs to project biased attitude of world leaders towards HR issues. In this context Pope in his 25th December (Christmas) address mentioned about HR issues in China and Pakistan but intentionally avoided India and Israel. Unfortunately, this depicts double standards on the part of the Pontiff. One would expect a higher standard of values and even-handed and balanced approach from the highest seat in the Catholic religion. The impact of human suffering cannot be selective for different races / nations. Unfortunately Pope’s vision remained insular to see HR issues in countries of his choice and he intentionally overlooked grossed HR violations in India and Israel. This biased attitude has caused dismay on the Pope’s selective omission during his Christmas address on 25th December 2010.
Julian Assange, founder of the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks, said he holds the names of senior officials in the Arab world who visit US embassies in their respective countries voluntarily “to establish links” with the CIA. “These officials are spies for the US in their countries,” Assange said in the second part of his interview with Arab television network Al Jazeera. He said the leaked documents in his possession show that Arab officials reveal sensitive information on their colleagues and respective countries. The WikiLeaks founder said the website would consider exposing the names of the Arab officials only if it would be certain it would not lead to their death. Assange warned that the revelations may lead to dangerous coups in the Arab world. He added that WikiLeaks plans to reveal some 7,000 documents related to Egypt and its president, Hosni Mubarak. Other leaked documents, he said, reveal information on the oil industry in the Arab world over the past few decades.
