ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Sunday constituted a four-member relief committee consisting of MNAs Qamar Zaman Kaira, Raja Pervaiz Asharaf, Nazar Muhammad Gondal and Senator Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari to supervise the relief assistance for the rain affected people of Interior Sindh. The committee will meet on daily basis in order to assess the requirements of the people in consultation with the provincial government and other relief agencies operating in the areas.
The Secretariat of the committee has been set up in the Prime Minister Secretariat which will work round the clock and will get the information about the devastation from the provincial and district administration.The committee held its first meeting on Sunday in which all the members of the committee participated. Deputy Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Secretary Information, Acting Secretary Cabinet and the senior representatives of Health organizations attended the meeting.The committee took stock of the whole situation and the representative of the NDMA informed that 43000 tents under the instruction of the Prime Minister have already been dispatched to the affected areas, while red crescent arranged 30000 and Sindh government provided 17000 tents.
The committee was informed that at present 150000 tents are required and the figure may go up after the accurate assessment.It may be mentioned here that the Federal Government has already asked the tent manufacturing companies to make 100,000 tents to meet the anticipated requirements.The committee was informed that 10000 tents will be dispatched to Badin tomorrow.The committee decided to contact the Chief Secretary Sindh and other officials constantly to coordinate response on regular basis.The committee will provide 100,000 ration bags per day till the situation improved.The committee also directed the health organizations of Federal and Provincial governments to take immediate preventative and curative measures to counter the spread of flood and rain borne diseases. – APP
