The unabated incidents of violence and target killing continued in the mega city on Monday in some areas and the death toll has risen to 23 during the last 24 hours while police and rangers have nabbed 65 suspects from various spots of the city on Monday.

Police said that most of the violence took place in Malir area where rocket shells were fired last night but police claimed to have arrested those miscreants involved in rocket firing along with several others. However on Monday the situation in the area was reported to be calm.“Situation in Malir is normal where business activities were returning to daily routine but tension still prevais in most areas of the city of millions,” senior police officials were reported as saying.

Police and rangers raided Landhi-89, Bilal Colony, Mohabbat Nagar, Liaquatabad, Orangi Town, Gulberg, North Nazimabad and Malir and rounded up 65 suspects while the search drive was underway. Police claimed to have seized weaponry during the search drive.Sindh IG Wajid Durrani has directed Additional IG Karachi and other higher police officials to devise an effective strategy to control the worsening situation in the city.Pillion riding ban has been imposed in the city keeping in view the deteriorating situation which was lifted earlier by the Sindh home minister. However, IG Wajid Durrani said that senior citizens and women will be exempt from the ban. Ban on pillion riding will remain in force till further orders, the IG Sindh said.

On the other hand general public strongly condemned imposition of ban on pillion riding, saying that this move of the government will add to the miseries of the masses already facing numerous problems.
Extra-contingents of police and rangers were deployed in tension-hit areas of the city who were conducting immense search of all those traveling on roads and authorities have claimed that situation in most parts of the city was normal.

Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah during his meeting with the rangers and police high-ups has directed them to initiate ruthless crack down against the miscreants in order to restore peace and tranquility in the city.On the other hand, locals have expressed their dismay at the steps taken so far and termed government claims for restoration of peace in the city as hollow slogans and demanded Swat-like military operation in the tension riddled spots of the city.Meanwhile, Karachi Bar Association observed strike against the killing of renowned lawyer Mukhtar Bukhari who was shot dead by unknown miscreants. – Nation
