ISLAMABAD: The Punjab law minister’s staff had refused to receive the summons, the apex court was informed on Thursday as it heard a case against Rana Sanaullah for his June 18 statement wherein he had asserted that former federal law minister “Babar Awan was liable to be murdered”. The court, while refusing to allow Punjab Additional Advocate General Razaaq A Mirza to appear on behalf of the provincial minister, re-summoned him on July 18. Justice Javed Iqbal conducted the hearing of the suo motu case in his chamber. He had been apprised by the AAG that the minister was in the United Kingdom and could not appear in person. Ramzan Chaudhry, counsel for Babar Awan, strongly objected to the stance taken by the Punjab government’s top lawyer, and said that the court’s summons were not received by a subordinate of the minister. He prayed that contempt proceedings be initiated against Sanaullah for not receiving the court’s notice. Justice Iqbal observed that the issue should be taken seriously. The judge had, last week, summoned the law minister. Babar Awan had, on June 20, moved an application in the Supreme Court against Sanaullah, saying that “his life was in danger”. – Dailytimes
