LONDON: British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg called on President Asif Ali Zardari, Thursday and discussed in detail the progress in bilateral relations, regional situation, prospects of expanding Pak-UK trade and business; UK’s support to Pakistan’s access to European markets and the positive contribution of Pakistani community towards economy, politics and cultural diversity of the UK.Chairman Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also present in the meeting.British Deputy Prime Minister was accompanied by the British High Commissioner to Pakistan Sir Adam Thomson and Mark Sedwill, Special Representative on Pakistan and Afghanistan.
From Pakistani side those who attended the meeting included Secretary General Mr. Salman Farouqi, High Commissioner Mr. Wajid Sahamsul Hassan , Spokesperson Mr. Farhatullah Babar and other senior officials.While appreciating UK’s support towards rehabilitation and reconstruction in the aftermath of last year’s floods in Pakistan , President lauded Mr. Clegg’s efforts by visiting Pakistan which helped boast the spirits of people and added momentum to relief assistance from the UK and international community.
The two sides expressed satisfaction over the progress in bilateral relations during the period of coalition government in Britain.Mr. Clegg appreciated the positive contribution made by the Pakistan’s community towards British economy,politics and society.They also discussed enhancement of strategic summit level dialogues and increase in British development assistance to Pakistan particularly recent GBP 650 million announcement for primary education by the Prime Minister Cameron during his visit to Pakistan which indicates comprehensive up gradation of cooperation in diverse fields.President appreciated Britain’s support for Pakistan’s access to European markets and also supporting his country’s efforts for regional peace and stability.. – APP
