KARACHI: To curb rising incidents of street crimes in the city, the federal government has decided to establish community police, Daily Times learnt on Tuesday. According to sources, at a high-level meeting held recently, Interior Minister Rehman Malik had asked for recommendations from the Home Department to establish community police in the city to control the rising street and group crimes. The meeting also decided to constitute community police for timely action against target killers and assailants. Citizen-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) chief Ahmed Chinoy, while talking to Daily Times, said that under the supervision of CPLC, a community police system has been initiated at four police stations including Ferozabad, PECHS, Bahadurabad and Chanesar Halt, which has been fruitful.

Adviser to Home Minister Sharfuddin Memon informed that the provincial home department has dispatched the recommendations for the formation of community police to the Interior Ministry. “We have recommended that it is one of the best ways to curb ongoing crimes and bridge the gap between police and citizens,” he added. In the first phase, the campaign would be started from the Liaquatabad, Ferozabad and the women police stations and if it were successful, it would be implemented at all police stations of the city, Memon said. He also suggested that there was no need to establish new police stations for community police as the available police stations could be used. Sources inform that after reviewing the recommendations forwarded by the Home Department, the Interior Ministry has completed consultations in this regard and the establishment of community police would be announced soon – Dailytimes
