DUBAI: He came, he saw and he conquered hearts. Musical sensation A. R. Rahman visited the campus of Global Indian International School in Dubai for an interactive session with students and parents as he took to the stage with his usual charm and poise.
Sporting a black jacket, Rahman walked into the packed venue amidst loud cheers.“Dubai is one of my favourite cities and it is one of the top three cities where I enjoy performing. I am happy to be here,” said Rahman.
The singer, composer and songwriter who is in Dubai for a concert took questions from the crowd as he spoke about his days as a music student. “Each one of us has a treasure within us and we need to discover it. I consider it a blessing,” he added. Asked about how someone could recreate his magic, Rahman said, “I don’t know if there will ever be another Rahman but I am sure there will be someone better than Rahman.”Two-time Academy Award-winner and a global music icon, Rahman’s music has touched the lives of millions of fans worldwide. Earning global fame for his work in Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman said he enjoys the best of both ‘Bollywood and Hollywood’.
“I enjoy world music and collaborating with other artists to create music. The West has great respect for our songs and Indian music has always enjoyed a global status,” said Rahman. The musical genius was, however, stumped by a sixth grader’s question as he asked for the ‘inspiration’ behind Rahman’s success. Thinking hard for an answer, he smiled and said, “You have to find yourself and what your dreams are. Always find new ways to learn but don’t try to be like someone else.”
The school’s art teacher presented a special portrait of Rahman to a standing ovation from the crowd.“A.R. Rahman is a global Indian who always strives for excellence in his work and whose dedication and achievements reflect the ethics we promote at the school,” said Kamal Kalwani, vice-chairman of GIIS Dubai.Performing alongside Mohit Chauhan, Shweta Pandit, Javed Ali, Sivamani, Suresh Peters and other leading artistes, the ‘A.R.
