Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday hailed the sacrifices of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) during a visit to the premier intelligence agency’s headquarters. It was the incumbent army chief’s second visit to the ISI headquarters in over four months.
On December 4, the army chief had paid his maiden visit to the intelligence agency’s headquarters after assuming the army’s command on November 29. According to informed military officials, a team of ISI generals led by ISI Director General Lieutenant General Zaheerul Islam briefed the army chief about the ongoing peace talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) that have lately seen an apparent deadlock.
Other generals reported to be in the briefing were ISI’s DG Security Major General Sajjad Rasool, DG Counter-Terrorism Maj Gen Naveed Mukhtar, DG Counter-Intelligence Maj Gen Nasir Dilawar Shah and ISI’s sector commanders in the four provinces. A statement from the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the army chief Raheel Sharif was given a detailed briefing on the internal and external security situation of the country. The COAS, it added, appreciated the role of ISI towards national security, and lauded the contributions and sacrifices of its officers and men for the “strengthening of defence of the motherland”. –dailytimes
