Martin Kaymer will topple Lee Westwood as world number one on Monday after his one up victory over Bubba Watson in the WGC Match Play semi-finals in Arizona.German Kaymer, 26, will face Luke Donald in Sunday’s final after the Englishman cruised past American Matt Kuchar 6&5.After demolishing Ryan Moore 5&4 in the quarter-finals, Donald enjoyed a convincing last-four win.Donald will become world number three if he can win the Arizona event. The 33-year-old started the day by cruising to victory over Moore with four holes to spare. He continued to impress against Kuchar, who had narrowly beaten South Korea’s YE Yang to reach the semi-finals, going six shots up at the turn having birdied all but two of the first nine holes. After going seven-up on the 10th, Donald could even afford to drop two straight holes before an excellent approach shot on the 13th allowed him to pick up another birdie and take the match.“It was good,” said Donald, who only played 27 holes in the day. “I didn’t leave anything out there and I was pretty dominant. I was able to keep my opponents at bay.”On a long day like this it was nice to get done early in both matches. I didn’t know I could go to number three in the world, but that would be amazing. I’ve been playing consistently but it’s been a while since I have won in America.”Meanwhile, Kaymer hung on to get the better of Ryder Cup team-mate Miguel Angel Jimenez in the quarter-finals before edging past Watson at the last. The German, who at 26 is the second-youngest holder of the number one spot after Tiger Woods, paid tribute to Fanny Sunesson, Nick Faldo’s former caddie.”When I played the qualifying school, I could always call her and then we talked about a few suggestions for the golf course, how I felt about certain golf shots,” he said.”Then, since 2008 when I won my first tournament, we were talking about why I won, why I mess up some tournaments, just to find solutions for things.”In the end of the day I found the solutions myself, but only through talking to her and the experiences she had and the right questions she asked me made me to the golf player I am today – BBC
