Following the Rashid Latif episode, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took an unusual step to name Moin Khan as the new chief selector and manager of the national team on Monday.

Khan, who served as the head coach of the team that took part in the recent Asia Cup and the WorldTwenty20 tournaments, is expected to take over his new role immediately. In a media release, the PCB also announced the appointment of former team manager and Test Captain Zaheer Abbas as Principle Advisor to Chairman Najam Sethi. The release added that Moin khan has been given his new role after his department, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) allowed him to join the board on deputation. The chief selector’s role was vacant after former wicket keeper batsman and Test captain Rashid Latif withdrew after a fallout with the board, before even assuming charge of the office.

Khan’s immediate task would be to pick a selection committee in consultation with the PCB; the board wants to hole an intensive training camp for national players in the coming days and Moin khan will choose the players that will take part in the camp. The PCB has also set up a committee to scrutinise and evaluate the applications for various cricketing positions advertised recently. Those include the positions of head coach, batting coach, fielding coach, spin bowling consultant, strength and conditioning coach, and sports physiotherapist. The committee comprises of Moin Khan, Intikhab Alam and Haroon Rashid. -tribune
