Appreciating the people for rejecting street agitation, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said it was a matter of satisfaction for him that issue of Panama Papers would be resolved in the Supreme Court.

“I have been striving continuously for this, and had on my own requested the Supreme Court to constitute a commission,” the premier said while chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet. “A law was framed and a parliamentary committee was also constituted, but all of our efforts remained unsuccessful. The objective of the agitators was to raise this issue on the streets alone. Thanks God, this issue has now come before the Supreme Court, where God willing it would be decided in accordance with the constitution and law,” he added. The premier appreciated the people for rejecting the street protest and said the decision would be on merit.

“Those who are now offering thanks should have thanked much earlier.” Nawaz said there were doubts in the Supreme Court about the maintainability of this petition, but “I have stopped lawyers from debating or questioning the maintainability” and had asked them to let the petition be admitted. The accusers will, God willing, face embarrassment. They had to face embarrassment after decision of the 2014 commission as well. But they never expressed their regrets even after wasting 126 days of the nation,” he remarked. He said that after 2014, God blessed the PML-N with successes in the Cantonment Board, local bodies, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections.

“Now we have to work hard even more, and have to work day and night for the resolution of masses’ problems, and economic uplift,” he added. The prime minister referred to the recent visits of the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the president of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and said they were appreciative of the country’s economic development. By the grace of God, we have concluded our programme with the IMF, and it is for the first time in Pakistan’s history that we have completed the economic reforms programme,” he maintained.

Nawaz lauded the efforts of the government’s economic team led by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, resulting in the improvement in Sovereign Credit Rating of Pakistan from -B to B by Standard’s and Poor’s (SNP). He called upon the nation to support the elected government’s hard work for the economic uplift and welfare of the country. He asked Ishaq Dar to prepare and give a briefing on electoral reforms during the next cabinet meeting. He also instructed him to prepare comprehensive recommendations on electoral reforms in consultation with all parliamentary parties in order to take necessary constitutional steps to improve the electoral system in the country. He said the next elections should be transparent and free of controversies so that the political parties could participate in the electoral process with full satisfaction and confidence. dailytimes
