An explosion took place on a Jaffar Express train on Tuesday at Sibi railway station, leaving 12 people dead including women and children, while 40 others sustained injuries. Jaffar Express Blast“The blast took place inside bogie number 9 of passenger Train Jaffar Express, which was on its way to Rawalpindi from Quetta,” Qazi Hussain, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) police Sibi told. President Mamnoon Hussain condemned the killings in the blast which occurred ten minutes after the train stopped at the railway station and two bogies were derailed due to the explosion.

“It seems the explosive materials were planted inside the passenger train at Sibi railway station,” a railway official said. Rescue teams have reached the site of the blast and a rescue operation is underway. Fire brigade vehicles have also reached the area and are busy extinguishing the bogeys that had caught fire as a result of the explosion. “Three people burnt to death and at least 20 others sustained injuries,” rescue workers had stated earlier today.

While speaking to Express News earlier today, Dr Ghulam Sarwar of MS Civil Hospital stated that at least 30 of the injured were brought to the hospital for medical treatment. “We have received the injured but no dead bodies have been brought to the hospital as of yet. The doctors are trying to save the lives of the injured,” stated Dr Sarwar. The Frontier Corps personnel and the police have cordoned off the area. -Tribune
