Pakistan starts power import from Iran to meet Makran division needsISLAMABAD: Pakistan started importing 70MW electricity from Iran to meet the electricity demand of Makran division.
Spokesman of the Ministry of Water and Power said on Wednesday after enhancing the transmission lines capacity, Iran has increased its power supply upto 70 MW to Pakistan from February 26, 2012. Earlier, Pakistan was getting only 35 MW from Iran. He said entire electricity power importing from Iran, was being supplied to the Makran division include Gwadar Deep Sea port, Gwadar district, Turbat, Panjgore, Mand and other areas of the division, adding that 70 MW would meet the electricity demand for next five years of the division and all the division has been made load shedding free area.

Federal Minister for Water and Power, Syed Naveed Qamar has said the government was taking all steps to facilitate the people of Balochistan, adding industrial, commercial and domestic consumers of the area would get benefit from this imported electricity power and would also be helpful for economic development in the said division.Spokesman said the overall demand of the Makran division was 55 MW in summer season and 40 MW in winter season, while Quetta Electric Supply Company (QUESCO) had been shedding the power load upto 10 to 12 hours in all the areas of the division in summer to keep intact the system. He maintained two separate projects of import of power from Iran, 1000 MW and 100 MW were in the final stages and construction of transmission would be started as early as possible. – Dailytimes
