Saying that what could an armyman do when the nation gives him a call (other than answering it), former military ruler, Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf, Thursday underscored the role of a country’s army should always be constitutional.

“On the face of it, system is but nothing in itself. It is only good when it does good to the country”, the retired general said addressing the Youth Parliament of Pakistan, a project launched by the PILDAT to engage youth in healthy discourse and expose them to the democratic process and practices. Stressing that a cut in defense budget would benight Pakistan’s future, the 71-year-old, who got hold of power in a bloodless coup in 1999, said Pakistan must first put its own house in order before the rest.

“In the absence of check-and-balance the state of affairs will always be as it is now-a-days in Pakistan,” Musharraf said. He said, “Some claim Election 2013 was riddled with rigging and take law in their hands. They stage demonstrations on the pretext of being denied justice.” “God help us now as these protest ‘sit-ins’ are becoming endemic in the country,” said he regretting over the unchecked bad governance in Pakistan. -samaa
