ECC takes notice of irregularities in Nandi Pur Combined Cycle Project

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet while discussing the progress on the Nandi Pur Combined Cycle Project noted the news item appearing in a Section of Press alleging that there have been some irregularities in the revised cost of the project.

The ECC which met here under the chairmanship of Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Thursday decided that the matter should be immediately looked into by the Ministry of Planning and Development and the facts should be brought before the ECC and shared with the people of Pakistan.To provide maximum relief to the poor of the country during the Holy Month of Ramazan, the ECC during its previous meeting dated 2.7.2013 approved relief package worth Rs.2 billion.

The ECC was informed that Rs.1 billion of Ramazan Relief Package have already been released to Ministry of Industries and Production.The Finance Minister in this context said that to ensure positive impact of the Ramazan Relief Package many decisions were taken yesterday during the meeting of National Price Monitoring Committee.The combined effect of the decisions of the two meetings will provide relief to the poor.The ECC during its meeting held on June 27, 2013 decided that TCP may procure 100,000 tons of sugar from domestic sugar mills.

The procurement would be through two tenders of 50,000 tons each.Ministry of Commerce reported that Trading Corporation of Pakistan has issued a tender notice on July,3, 2013 for procurement of 50,000MT white sugar from local sugar mills.The bid will be received and opened on 18th July 2013. Second tender for 50,000MT will be issued on July 18,2013 upto opening of last tender.During its last meeting the ECC authorized Ministry of Industry and Production to import 300,000 MT urea.The Ministry of Industries and Production informed the ECC that tenders for procurement of urea have been floated.

The Finance Minister further said that allocation of gas for production of 50,000 MT of urea per month should be done today positively.The meeting expressed satisfaction over the liquidation of Rs.322 billion in circular debt and the remaining amount of Rs.181 billion would be settled by the end of this month.The meeting was attended by Minister for Industries and Production, Ghulam Murtaza Jaoi, Minister for National Food Security and Research, Sikandar Hayat Bosan, Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Senator Pervaz Rashid, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Railways, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Minister for Water and Power, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Minister for Science and Technology, Zahid Hamid, Minister of State for Information Technology, Ms Anoosha Rehman Khan and heads of various divisions and departments.It was decided that the ECC will meet tomorrow again to discuss one point agenda i.e. the business plan for PIA. – APP
