KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday administered oath to Abdul Rauf Chaudhry as Federal Tax Ombudsman. The oath-taking ceremony held here at the Bilawal House, was attended among others by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and provincial ministers.
The new Federal Tax Ombudsman has retired as Secretary Establishment. Earlier, he served as Federal Secretary Housing, Education and Textile Ministry and also as the Chairman of the Capital Development Authority. The office of Federal Tax Ombudsman was established under the Establishment of the Office of the Federal Tax Ombudsman Ordinance, 2000 (Ordinance No. XXXV) of 2000) for the redressal of grievances of the citizens against the maladministration of taxation authorities.
The Section 03 of the Ordinance provides that there shall be a Federal Tax Ombudsman, who shall be appointed by the President and Section 4 provides that his tenure shall be four years which shall not be extendable.The post of Federal Tax Ombudsman has been vacant after the four-year tenure of Muhammad Shoaib Suddle as Federal Tax Ombudsman, expired on June 2 this year.
The Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights had recommended to the Prime Minister to appoint Abdul Rauf Chaudhry against the post being most suitable person.Accordingly acting upon the advice of the Prime Minister, the President had approved the appointment of Abdul Rauf Chaudhry as Federal Tax Ombudsman for a period of four years from the date on which he assumes charge of office of Federal Tax Ombudsman. – APP
