Ex-Wapda chief NABbed in Bosnia

ISLAMABAD – WAPDA’s renegade former Chairman Gen (r) Zahid Ali Akbar has been detained in Bosnia with the help of Interpol. He was wanted to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a case of making assets beyond means to the tune of Rs267.61 million.

The Bureau was reportedly making frantic efforts to capture Zahid for the last three months through international agencies, a NAB official said. All legal formalities are being completed to bring him back to Pakistan, he added. The accused during his tenure as Wapda chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, from 1987 to 1992, reportedly indulged in massive corruption. A reference against him is pending before the Accountability Court Lahore since July 2006. He was declared a proclaimed offender on May 10, 2007.

The evidence collected during the investigation establishes that Gen (r) Zahid owns assets worth around Rs176 million, in his name and in the names of his dependents. These assets include 77 local and foreign currency bank accounts held by him, his relatives and his business concerns.

The accused remitted $706,200 (Rs32.4 million @ Rs46/ US $) out of the country during the period from 1993 to 1998. The assets were found disproportionate to his known sources of income and he could not reasonably account for these assets. – Nation
