Autonomy of Auditor General’s office must for accountability: PM

Syed Yusuf Raza GilaniISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday stressed that the autonomy of the office of Auditor General must be ensured to meet the imperatives of accountability and transparency in governance.

He was talking to Auditor General of Pakistan Akhtar Buland Rana who called on him at the PM House here.The Prime Minister said the Auditor General was accountable to the Parliament.The Prime Minister said it was for the first time in the history of Pakistan that autonomy had been given to the office of the Auditor General enabling it to discharge its constitutional responsibilities with freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.

Earlier, the Auditor General briefed the Prime Minister about the working of the office and said the office was the eyes and ears of the Parliament. He said autonomy was necessary to meet the demands of audit and accounts separately.He thanked the Prime Minister for providing support to the independent work. – APP
