ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani is understood to have issued a notice of defamation to the Nawa-i-Waqt Group of Publications for publishing a column that alleged that he is a US citizen.
The notice allegedly sent by Mr Haqqani’s lawyer, but not yet received by the organization, is understood to convey the concern that the daily Nawa-i-Waqt published a column which claimed that Pakistan’s ambassador to the US holds American nationality.
According to Mr Haqqani’s lawyer, the allegation by the author of the column has damaged his reputation and his ability to function for the good of Pakistan as its representative in the United States at a critical juncture. The notice is also understood to stress that His Excellency Husain Haqqani has never held, obtained or applied for citizenship status in the United States or any other country.
The Nawa-i-Waqt Editorial Board is investigating Ambassador Haqqani’s concerns about the column. If some objectionable contents are found, the author of the said column will be requested to rectify them, shortly.
