Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Tuesday inaugurated the over Rs 12 billion Islamabad-Murree Expressway, terming it a new strategic link with Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Gilani unveiled the plaque of the four-lane 50 km long winding road through the picturesque Murree hills and addressed a large gathering of workers of Pakistan Peoples Party from the nearby areas. The Expressway would divide the traffic burden on the older route to Murree.
The Expressway has been constructed along a new alignment in the hilly terrain by the Pakistani engineers. Special considerations for structural design have been kept in view to check landslides and to make the travel safe. Two phases of the Expressway that will eventually link Islamabad to the capital of AJK-Muzaffarabad have been completed. In the third phase, the existing road will be widened and upgraded from Lower Topa to Kohala, while in the final phase the section from Kohala to Muzaffarabad would be improved. – App
