Deputy secy, two others convicted in fraud case

PESHAWAR: The special judge anti-corruption, Azhar Khan, on Friday convicted three persons including a deputy secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board in a case of provision of substandard paper and sentenced them to eight years rigorous imprisonment each with collective fine of Rs10.5 million.Following completion of arguments and recording of evidence, the court pronounced that the prosecution had proven its case against the three suspects including deputy secretary Abdur Raheem, store-keeper Jehanzeb, and paper supplier Akhter Ali Shah, who is managing director of a firm, Sindh Enterprises.

The public prosecutor, Ibadur Rehman Qureshi, appeared for the state and contended that the FIR of the case was registered on May 8, 2002, under sections 419, 420, 468 and 471 of Pakistan Penal Code.He stated that the accused had provided 35 metric tons of substan-dard paper for the purpose of printing and thus they had inflicted a loss of Rs24.7 million to the exchequer.The convict, Abdur Rehman was fined Rs4 million, Akhter Ali Rs5 million, whereas Jehanzeb was fined Rs1.5 million. – APP
