LAHORE: A student from the Punjab University (PU) Law College, on Tuesday, opened fire on the house of a PU Syndicate member, accusing him of conducting illegal activities in the disciplinary committee.

According to details, the disciplinary committee had earlier called the assailant, Ibrar Watto, for a personal hearing. He came along with 20 to 25 accomplices.Later, two masked students, on a bike, opened fire outside Dr Shaukat Ali’s house. A bullet pierced through the gate and hit the drawing room window. The gatekeeper, Mehmood, and an armed guard, Waheed, who were standing outside the guesthouse at the moment tried to catch the culprits but they managed to escape form the scene. They were carrying a silver pistol in their hands, the gatekeeper said.

According to PU Student Adviser Iftikhar Chaudhry, Ibrar Watoo also conducted aerial firing while leaving the proceedings of the disciplinary committee. It is pertinent to mention here that Prof Dr Shaukat Ali is a member of the disciplinary committee and had been elected as a member of PU Syndicate recently.PU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran strongly condemned the firing incident outside Dr Shaukat’s house. The VC contacted IG Police Javed Iqbal asking him to take immediate action against the culprits, who further issued instructions to Muslim Town DSP, upon which police rushed to the campus immediately.

Meanwhile, the PU spokesman said that the administration could neither be pressurised nor stopped from implementing rules and regulations through these criminal and illegal activities. The administration has also filed an application with police for necessary legal action. Moreover, the PU teachers will stage a rally to condemn the incident, on Wednesday at 10am from the Centre for Undergraduate Studies. – Dailytimes
