KARACHI: Citizens faced one of the worst power breakdowns across the metropolis following the closure of power utility’s field operations in a protest on Wednesday as the company’s unionists besieged its head office here at Gizri.

Almost half of the city fell into darkness due to increased loading shedding, power breakdowns and faults of local or major nature not being attended by the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) as the company suspended its operations in a protest against its head office’s besiegement by the activists of all labour unions.

Currently, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is supplying 720MW to the KESC despite a serious power shortage of 6,000 MW in its network.Residential and commercial areas remained blacked out on Wednesday evening while some areas were yet experiencing power outages since last 10 to 12 hours. These long outages also hampered water supply across the city as pumping stations remained without power supply despite KESC’s claims that they were supplying uninterrupted power to hospitals, ports and pumping stations. – Dailytimes
