KARACHI: Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested an accused involved in the country’s biggest bank heist, besides five other suspects involved in various cases of heinous crime.Speaking at a press conference, Liaquatabad SP Khawaja Naveed Nisar informed media that his police party arrested six suspects, including one involved in the country’s biggest bank robbery while the remaining five accused in target killings, kidnappings for ransom and extortion cases. He said, Jannat Ali Jaffari was one of the main fugitives on the run, involved in December 2009 heist when more than Rs 300 million were looted from a bank at II Chandigar Road.

Jaffari had gone into hiding and repeatedly escaped arrests though, at least five other accused in the same case were nabbed over the years. The suspect was eventually trapped into the dragnet of police in Angara Goth early Tuesday morning. He has confessed to working in close coordination with the notorious criminal Muddasir chief. He said that he had provided shelter to the accused in the case which at that time was labelled the country’s biggest heist. SP further said that the suspect has a previous criminal record of at least four other cases of target killing and kidnappings for ransom.

The police officer also showed five other nabbed accused, including Raees Pathan, Badshah Khan and Tariq Khan, who were charged with involvement in kidnappings for ransom and target killing cases and Mohammad Nadeem and Fazal Hayat, said to be extortionists. Naveed said that the suspects made money by kidnapping innocent people for a few hours in their own cars and releasing them after payment. Most such kidnappings were conducted by the group in Clifton, Defence, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Liaqatabad. Police nabbed the accused from their hideout in Ilyas Goth. – Dailytimes
