75,000 proclaimed offenders ‘at large’

LAHORE – The performance of the police is sharply declining in the largest Punjab province, where law and order situation is worsening with more than 75,000 proclaimed offenders still are at large and poor investigations badly hampering the prosecution of crimes cases of heinous nature. Police sources claimed that more than 75,000 proclaimed offenders (POs) including hardened criminals involved in multiple killings, are at large across the Punjab as the police have failed to arrest them.

The incidents of dacoities, robberies and auto-lifting have also registered a considerable increase this year while the police are also unable to trace 120 cases of murder. According to the police record, out of 3278 cases of murders the police have failed to arrest the killers in no less than 1100 cases while the police challaned only 1959 cases so far. Police sources said that the killers, who are at large in multiple killings, are emerging as most desperate gangsters as they killed more people when the police are unable to arrest them.

Out 107 cases of kidnapping for ransom registered in Punjab province, the police have failed to arrest the gangsters involved in more than 20 cases while police submitted challans of only 70 cases before the courts so far. Similarly, the police registered 3286 cases of motor vehicle snatching during the first six months of this year and submitted challans of only 1311 cases before the courts while according to the police, 423 cases of auto-snatching could never be traced. Believe it or not, the police claimed that at least 2859 cases of motor vehicle theft could not be traced in the province, where more than 10900 vehicles were stolen during the first six months of 2011.

Dacoits struck no less than 1694 times in different parts of the Punjab province and took away cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth millions of rupees while police submitted challans of only 775 cases before the courts. Robbers hit the Punjab province for no less than 10,000 times during the first six months of this year while the police submitted challans of only 3751 cases before the court and declared that some 1408 cases are untraceable. – Nation
