NEC Corp. said it has resumed operations at five plants in three prefectures struck by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, but automakers are delaying restarting full-fledged operations due to a lack of parts.

NEC has restarted operations at five factories in the prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima that were being inspected or repaired since the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami.
The five plants manufacture items such as communications equipment and electronics components.

The company has yet to assess the financial impact of the quake, an official said Wednesday.

Suzuki Motor Corp. said it would suspend car production at its plants Thursday and Friday as a result of difficulties procuring certain parts, though it managed to manufacture vehicles Tuesday and Wednesday using components in stock.

The automaker said it will continue to operate plants to assemble engines and produce cast components but will decide later when to resume operations next week.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said it would assemble cars with components in stock at a subsidiary in Gifu Prefecture on Thursday and at the unit and a plant in Aichi Prefecture on Friday, while suspending operations at its plant in Okayama Prefecture on both days.

Isuzu Motors Ltd. said it will resume making parts Monday, but operations at its two domestic factories will remain suspended until Friday.

Hino Motors Ltd. was to continue its manufacturing suspension at its plants in Tokyo and Gunma Prefecture until Thursday, company officials said – Japantimes
