US will provide $60m to Sindh

HYDERABAD, Feb 4: The US government will provide $60 million for bringing about improvement in water supply, education and infrastructure in 14 districts of Sindh.This was said by the US Consul-General in Karachi Martin William during a luncheon hosted by President, Hyderabad Chambers of Commerce and Industry Goharullah.

William Martin addressing the businessmen said that the US Vice-President Joe Biden had stressed on transparent relations between the two countries during his recent visit to Islamabad.Both, Pakistan and the US were facing terrorism threats which demanded cooperation to fight it off. He reminded the audience that the US was helping Pakistan even though its own economy was facing problems.Business counsellors of the two states were performing their roles satisfactorily, in the promotion of trade and business,he said

The US, said Consul-General, was keen on helping the business community of Sindh by promoting trade which would help in resolving its unemployment issue.Giving statistics, he said, the US imported Pakistani goods worth $3.2 billion and its export to Pakistan stood at Rs1.6 billion in 2009.President Obama was desirous of establishing a reconstruction opportunity zone in Pakistan for sending their goods to the US market free of duties he said adding that this was in continuation to development of long-term economic policies here.

Pakistan, William Martin said, was capable of improving power crisis through tariff structure and plugging the pilferages. The US companies were willing to cooperate in energy and agriculture sectors, he added while reminding how the US Marines and their aircraft assisted Pakistani Army in rescuing flood-hit people and providing them with food – Dawn
