LONDON: Speaker National Assembly, Dr. Fehmida Mirza has said that the passage of 18th and 19th constitutional amendments was reflective of high level of consensus between political parties of Pakistan on the issues of national importance.She expressed these views while apprising Chairperson, Conservative Party, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi of achievements of National Assembly of Pakistan, in a meeting held between them Monday. Pakistan High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan was also present on the occasion.
Dr. Fehmida Mirza informed Baroness Warsi about the prominent role being played by the women parliamentarians not only towards legislative business but also through Women Caucus of Parliamentarians in which women parliamentarians from all the political parties were actively involved in bringing into forefront issues pertaining to women as well as other spheres.She further added that immense amount of legislative business has taken place in the Parliament and about 35 laws cover important positive amendments on women issues.
Baroness Warsi expressed condolences over the assassination of Governor Punjab Mr. Salman Taseer and called upon making efforts for creating tolerance among the people as currently Muslim population of Pakistan was suffering even more than the minorities due to extremism and misuse of certain laws.Discussing current social, economic and political issues in Pakistan and rebuilding process in the aftermath of devastating floods , Baroness Warsi informed the speaker that through her NGO Savera which is completely managed by women, 6 houses have been completed and other six houses will be completed shortly .Besides this skill training was being provided to women in various parts of Pakistan in order to enable them gain economic and social empowerment, she added.Dr. Mirza further informed that in Pakistan at present the women representation in the parliament stands at 22.5 % which is higher than in many developed countries.Both sides agreed on enhancing parliamentary exchanges particularly those of women parliamentarians between the two friendly countries with a view to forge better understanding – AAP
