QUETTA: A high-level meeting presided over by the Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani and attended by senior civil and military servants estimated that the worst ever recorded floods had inflicted a loss of over Rs 1 trillion on the province of Balochistan.
The meeting was told that flood torrents had washed away 75,261 houses, standing crops on 700,000 acres of land and 305 kilometers roads and hundreds of official premises in 12 districts of Balochsitan.
On Friday, dozens of more flood victims infected with gastroenteritis, cholera and waterborne diseases were admitted to Dera Murad Jamali, Sibi and Quetta hospitals.
Minister for Communication and Works Mir Sadique Umrnai while talking to media said that daily deaths of four to five children due to gastroenteritis in Balochistan’s flood-hit area had become a routine matter.
He alleged that hundreds of thousands of flood survivors trapped in many-foot deep floodwaters were still deprived of food, clean drinking water, medicines and tents.
He further blamed that relevant departments and NGOs were helping Balochistan’s flood survivors what he said only in newspapers statements and not in practical. Umrani said, Through media, we learnt that foreign aid for flood victims had been received in millions of dollars, adding but no single penny was being witnessed to be used for relief of Balochsitan’s affectees.
Minister for Prosecution and spokesperson for the Balochistan government, Ms. Rahila Durrani told that floodwaters would remain standing in Jaffarabad, and parts of Jhal Magsi and Nasirabad for one month more. She hoped that allocation of Rs 220 million from the provincial government and release of Rs 50 million from the federal government for 1.1 million flood survivors in Balochistan would help in resolving the miseries of the affected people.
Former Senator and senior leader of the National Party Dr Abdul Hayee Baloch while speaking to newsmen claimed that population of Jaffarabad, and Jhal Magsi in Balochistan and Garhi Khairo, Shehdadkot and other areas in Sindh could be saved from devastation if the Irrigation Department and other relevant stakeholders made breach in Ali Wahin instead Tori Band along Indus River. He maintained that after breach in Ali Wahin, flood torrents could be diverted to desert of Balochistan and Sindh instead populated areas.
He noted that soon after breach in Tori Band, 08-foot deep flood torrent which was 85 kilometers long and 45 kilometers wide inundated Dera Allahyar, the district headquarters of Jaffarabad.
He added that still bodies were being fished out from standing floodwaters in Balochistan a affected districts.
