Charlie Hunnam is a far cry from his Sons of Anarchy character as he goes shirtless

Fans of Sons of Anarchy are used to seeing him covered in tattoos, with long hair and a beard.

But it is a very different Charlie Hunnam who appears in new sci-fi action film Pacific Rim.The 33-year-old British actor is clean shaven with a short hair cut and not a sign of body ink over his bulging muscles in one shirtless snapshot. The star plays washed up pilot Raleigh Becket in the Guillermo del Toro-directed film about a race of aliens known as Kaiju, who have emerged from the depths of the sea to destroy the human race.

Giant robots called Jaegers piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the attackers in the action packed sci-fi adventure.New film stills of the action show the star with rippling muscles looking grimly determined as he practices fighting skills with co-star Rinko Kikuchi  who plays his co-pilot Mako Mori. Another photograph shows Charlie emerging in a full body suit of intricate moulded armour in a sea of flames

The film co-stars Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and is directed by Guillermo del Toro  in his first film since 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army.’I play a guy, called Raleigh, who was one of the super-soldiers that pilot these giant robots,’ Charlie told Collider about his role in the film which will be released on July 12.’When you meet me, in the beginning of the story, I’ve suffered a giant loss.  Not only has it killed my sense of self-worth, but also my will to fight and keep on going.  And then, Rinko [Kikuchi] and Idris [Elba], and a couple other people, bring me out of retirement to try to help with this grand push.’

Guillermo is hoping for big things from the film which cost between $180million and $200 million to make, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, there are said to be concerns from movie executives that the film will have a ‘soft opening’ in a crowded summer blockbuster market which includes Man of Steel and World War Z.However, Charlie is confident that his character will resonate with movie goers.’I think that [his character’s] journey is a very relatable one,’ he said.

‘Everybody, at some point in their life, has fallen down and not felt like getting back up, but you have to, no matter how difficult it is.’That’s something that’s pretty easily relatable to audiences, I hope.’Charlie’s new role is particularly different to his Sons of Anarchy alter ego Jax Teller – the President of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club.He has starred in the FX drama series since 2008. – DailyMail
