Opposition protesters announced they will rally outside the presidential palace on Tuesday to protest against a December 15 referendum on Egypt’s controversial draft constitution.
The rally was dubbed “the final warning,” in a joint statement from youth groups which have been organising protests, the official news agency MENA reported.Demonstrators will also protest against new sweeping powers gained by President Mohamed Mursi in a November 22 decree which sparked Egypt’s worst political crisis since his election in June.
A rushed-through draft constitution adopted by an Islamist-dominated panel boycotted by liberals and Christians amid popular unrest will go to a vote on December 15, Mursi announced late on Saturday. The joint statement was signed off by various opposition parties which have been holding a sit-in in Tahrir Square, the iconic symbol of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak last year. The political standoff has squared largely secular opponents of Mursi against his Islamist supporters, who have held rival rallies in Cairo. – Khaleenews
