MANAMA: Bahrain has begun work on the pearl road project that might be included in the UN world heritage list. The first phase, which will be concluded on 2012, includes an information centre, a coffee shop and a showroom for lectures and exhibitions. They will be located in Halat Abumaher fort in Muharraq.Archaeological items found recently in the fort will be showcased at the centre. The project, being constructed by the Ministry of Culture, aims to revive traditional locations in Bahrain.

After the completion of the project, the culture ministry would make efforts to include it in the world heritage list. The idea for the project was developed in 2007 after a study of the area. Through the project, Bahrain tries to immortalise the pearling profession which was main source of revenue in the country before the discovery of oil.The project will be constructed over an area on 3.2 kilometres and will include renovation of 18 traditional houses to tell the stories of those who worked in the pearling profession, including divers, traders and traditional physicians. – Khaleejnews
