Hyères Fashion and Photography Festival

It’s a great time for fans of fashion exhibitions at the moment, with the Hyères International Fashion and Photography Festival presenting rising talents such as Japanese photographer Yasuyuki Takagi and Australian creator Narelle Dore.

Meanwhile, Christian Louboutin is the latest big name to receive his own fashion retrospective, launching at London’s Design Museum May 1. Read about this and other important upcoming fashion events here.

Hyères International Fashion and Photography Festival
April 27-30
Hyères, France

The 27th edition of this parallel fashion and photography event will begin April 27, with one of the most anticipated elements being the annual competitions, which have in the past recognized design talent such as Viktor & Rolf. Creatives nominated in the fashion category include Narelle Dore, Ragne Kikas, Daniel Hurlin and Kim Choong-Wilkins, who was also cited as “One To Watch” by London’s Vauxhall Fashion Scout this year.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia
April 30 – May 4
Sydney, Australia

Formerly known as Rosemount Australia Fashion Week, this upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 edition welcomes new sponsor Mercedes-Benz. While big-name Australian designers Dion Lee and Josh Goot recently pulled out of the event, labels still on the schedule include Romance Was Born, Zimmermann, Jayson Brunsdon, Akira and Ellery.

Christian Louboutin
May 1 – July 9

In honor of Christian Louboutin’s 20th anniversary, London’s Design Museum presents the first UK retrospective of the acclaimed French shoe designer, showcasing his work and inspiration over the past two decades. The creator’s design process will be at the core of the exhibition. Other fasion retrospectives that have already kicked off this year include the Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs expo which opened at Paris’s Les Arts Décoratifs and The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier at the De Young Museum in San Francisco.

The Future of Fashion

New York’s prestigious design school, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) will live stream its graduate fashion show, The Future of Fashion, for the first time this year via www.fitnyc.edu/futureoffashion. The school boasts alumni including Michael Kors, Ralph Rucci, Reem Acra, and Nanette Lepore, and designers such as Calvin Klein and Diane von Furstenburg will be attending this year’s presentation. Tune in at 7:30pm May 2.

Met Ball (the Costume Institute Gala)

This annual ball celebrates the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute and is dubbed the fashion industry’s Oscars thanks to the extravagant red carpet creations guests wear for their arrival. This year for the first time fans will be able to see the stars arrive from 6:30pm to 8:30pm EST via a live stream on Amazon.com, vogue.com and metmuseum.org. The gala precedes the opening of the Costume Institute’s expo Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion, which will run May 10 to August 19.

Barcelona Bridal Week

Following on from New York’s recent bridal shows, the 22nd edition of Europe’s most prestigious bridal fair, Barcelona Bridal Week, launches May 8, welcoming over 230 brands from across the globe in the realms of bridal, groom, ceremonial wear and even communion attire. Newcomers for this edition include Carlo Pignatelli, Hannibal Laguna, Zuhair Wall, ZM Woman, Joana Montez and Patricia de Melo.

Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations
May 10 – August 19
New York, USA

With film director Baz Luhrmann acting as creative consultant, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art pays tribute to Italian designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, exhibiting about 80 designs by Schiaparelli from the 1920s-1950s and by Prada from the 1980s to the present day, drawn mainly from The Costume Institute’s collection and the Prada archive. Last year’s Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty expo there attracted over 600,000 visitors.
