LONDON: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday appreciated the role of the UK-based non-governmental organizations that made enormous contributions towards development in Pakistan’s diverse sectors.

The Prime Minister was talking to Penny Lawrence from ‘Oxfam’, Justin Forsyth from ‘Save the Children UK’ and Jehangir Malik from Islamic Relief at the Lancaster House here. Gilani lauded the three NGOs for their excellent work in Pakistan especially during the last year’s devastating floods in the country. He mentioned Oxfam’s projects of education, health, woman issues and emergency relief.

Oxfam is running special cash-for-work projects in Pakistan to help people affected by floods to earn income. The Prime Minister thanked ‘Save the Children’ for helping more than three million children and adults in the floods. The NGO had created safe places for 120,000 children and improved the nutrition of 30,000 people.Gilani appreciated Islamic relief that plans to rebuild 60 villages in six different districts. The NGO also provided 52 water wells, electric pumps, health facilities for 134,000 people, 15,000 feet of drainage and agricultural tool kits for 10,000 people. – APP
