Over 1,300 students awarded degrees at DUHS convocation

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan on Sunday announced to give Rs 100 million to the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) endowment fund for its various projects.Addressing the 2nd convocation of the DUHS at its Ojha campus, the governor also announced to raise salaries and stipends of house officers, faculty members, post-graduate students, medical officers and doctors in the coming fiscal year.He urged the passing out graduates and faculty to strive hard to provide quality healthcare services to people.Over 1,300 graduates belonging to different disciplines received their degrees and shields at the convocation.Degrees were conferred upon the graduates of MBBS, BDS, Nursing and Medical Technology and other postgraduates of various disciplines for the year 2010 and 2011.Ibad congratulated the graduates and their parents. He also reminded all graduates of their responsibilities. He also appreciated the efforts of Vice Chancellor DUHS Prof Hameed Khan and his faculty members in the establishment and the developments of the university.It is essential for us to ensure that the investment in education will return to the society, the governor said, adding that healthcare system was in the state of evolution and it was the effort of government to make it not only affordable but also provide quality to all. The governor also appreciated the role of medical institutions in assisting the government in achieving its objectives by producing good doctors with their academic and research activities.Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed said doctors, nurses and paramedical staff are the backbone of healthcare system while provision of quality healthcare services could not be possible without the nurses.He said the Dow University had progressed tremendously since its inception. He urged the faculty and the staff to work with more dedication as the Sindh province was facing several health challenges that could not be tackled without dedicated efforts from every person associated with the healthcare system.

Prof Masood Hameed, Vice-Chancellor DUHS, recounted the progress of the university since its inception and also highlighted its progress. He informed that the DUHS had three constituent institutions in 2003, which gained the status of varsity but now it had almost 40 such institutions.Earlier, Sindh governor distributed gold medals, certificates and shields among students.The best MBBS Graduate for 2010 was Dr Aisha Rehman, best MBBS Graduate for 2011 was Mehwish Mehdi, best Medical Technology Graduate for 2009 was Faiza Erum, best Medical Technology Graduate for 2011 was Sadaf Hafeez, top three MBBS Graduates for 2010 (DMC) were Aisha Rehman, Mehwish Bano & Shamia Jawed.Top three MBBS Graduates for 2010 (SMC) were Aisha Nazeer, Lubna Aman and Chaudhary Faizan Ahmed while top three MBBS Graduates for 2011 (DMC) were Mehwish Mehdi, Ammarah Yasmeen and Fatima.Even the top three MBBS Graduates for 2011 (SMC) were also female students, including Nadia, Shireen Pyar Ali and Hina Aslam Qureshi. Top three Dental Graduates for 2011 (DIKIOHS) were SM Abdullah Salman, Amyna Sajwani and Nida Hanif while top three Nursing Graduates for 2010 (ION) were Tauqir Ahmed, Manzoor Ali and Nazia Nazir. Top three Nursing Graduates for 2011 (ION) were Saba Arther, Sana Ziauddin and Shah Nawaz. – Dailytimes
