LAHORE: The Punjab government would decentralise the Education Department and set up District Education Model Centres to address the problems of local teachers and Education Department staff, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said on Sunday.

Iqbal was speaking during the data collection activity of Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) in Narowal. He overviewed ASER activity in the district and interacted with volunteers and trainers participating in the survey. He said teachers and other Education Department officials had to visit Lahore for resolution of their problems, adding that it had, therefore, been decided that District Education Centres would set up to address issues of local teachers. He said that education must be the first priority of any nation. He added that Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi’s efforts must be complimented in the ASER survey for 2012.

He urged all parliamentarians to fully support and cooperate with ASER survey teams in their respective areas and take action according to the findings of the ASER 2012 report. “Such a support is crucial for increasing quality and standard of education in Pakistan,” he said.

Iqbal said that community members could play an important role in creating awareness about quality education in their areas. “Community members must be mobilised to point out problems and issues of the education sector,” he added.

National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Director General Khusro Pervaiz said there is “dearth of science teachers in Narowal and approximately 1,300 students enrolled from class 6 to 10 do not have a specialist science teacher assigned for them”. – Dailytimes
