ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court appointed Barrister Mohammad Jamil as the prosecutor in the contempt of court case against real-state tycoon Malik Riaz on Tuesday.
A two-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan which has been hearing the case against Riaz on charges of levelling harsh allegations against Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry at a press conference rejected a petition filed in the court seeking to add Malik Riaz’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL) and appointed Barrister Mohammad Jamil as the prosecutor in the case.
During the hearing Justice Afzal Khan remarked that the prosecution’s lawyer would act in accordance with the law and that the issue should not be unnecessarily blown out of proportion.he court had exempted Malik Riaz from appearing for the hearing today.The defendant’s lawyer Dr Basit requested the court to exempt his client from appearing for the next hearing as well.
Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan said that exemption from next hearing would be granted after the arguments of all parties have been heard.The court also rejected a petition filed by the former president of the Islamabad Bar Association, Ashraf Gujjar seeking to add the Bahria Town owner’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL).Justice Afzal Khan said in his remarks that Malik Riaz had returned from London on a show-cause notice issued by the court.The court indefinitely adjourned the next hearing on the case. – Dawn
