(CNN) — Play has been suspended on the opening day of the 38th Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, due to torrential rain at the Welsh course.
The action began on Friday morning in challenging conditions, with Europe’s Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer taking on the American pair of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.
Only three further groups were able to start before play was officially halted at around 0945 local time.

The next group to tee off were the Northern Irish pair of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, who faced America’s Stewart Cink and Dustin Johnson. After four holes, McDowell and McIlroy were left leading the match by one, the same lead fellow Europeans Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher held over Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods through three holes.
There were incredible scenes as Fisher hit his opening drive wide of the fairway and into a spectator’s umbrella. The Englishman did not let the incident, and subsequent dropped shot, affect the European pair’s performance however, as he shot a par four to go one up against the Americans.
