ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday appointed Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Chief Justice Peshawar High Court, Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Chief Justice Lahore High Court, and Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Senior Puisne Judge Sindh High Court, as judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
According to official sources, President made these appointments after confirmation of their nominations by the Parliamentary Committee and on the advice of the Prime Minister.Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said that earlier the Judicial Commission of Pakistan had nominated them and Justice Muhammad Athar Saeed, former Judge Sindh High Court, for appointment as judges of the Supreme Court of the Pakistan. However as deliberation of the Parliamentary Committee on the recommendations of the Judicial Commission in respect of Justice Muhammad Athar Saeed for his appointment as judge of the Supreme Court remained inconclusive, the provisions of the Clause 12 of Article 175 of the Constitution would become operative in his case.
The President on the advice of the Prime Minister also approved the appointment of Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Judge Lahore High Court as Chief Justice of Lahore High Court. Farhatullah Babar said that President also confirmed Justice Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi and Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan as Judges of the Islamabad High Court.The President also appointed Tuesday Noor-ul-Haq N Qureshi, Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui and Muhammad Azeem Khan Afridi as Additional Judges of the Islamabad High Court for a period of one year.
The confirmation of the two judges of the Islamabad High Court and appointment the three additional judges of Islamabad High Court for a period of one year was approved by the President in accordance with the procedure laid down in the Constitution, he said.The President also appointed Justice Dost Muhammad Khan senior judge Peshawar High Court as Chief Justice of the said High Court.Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said Justice Dost Muhammad Khan has been appointed as CJ PHC against the anticipated vacancy, which will occur on the appointment of the incumbent CJ Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan as Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
