New world number one Kim Clijsters has been beaten 4-6 3-6 by fourth seed Petra Kvitova in the Paris Open final.Clijsters, who won the Australian Open in January, had little reply to her Czech opponent’s power but appeared to find her rhythm in the second. But, Kvitova, 20, went on to clinch the set and with it her third career title. She said after beating a less than fully fit Clijsters: “I think it’s my biggest achievement. I lost my last two matches against Kim so I’m glad I won.”Clijsters, 27, added of her fitness: “I had a little bit of a neck problem but it’s not an excuse. She deserved to win.”The Belgian regained the world number one spot from Dane Caroline Wozniacki after reaching the semi-finals in Paris.Clijsters has held top spot three times before, twice in 2003 and once in 2006 before retiring in 2007 to have a child, only to make a stunning return. She won the 2009 US Open, retaining the title in 2010 and then adding the Australian Open this year – BBC
