LAHORE: The Royal Palm Golf Tournament, contested over 18 holes on a chilly December day, here on Sunday at the Royal Palm Club saw golfers of talent and distinction appear in full strength in the stroke play competition. Against tough resistance from his fellow competitors like Abbas Ali Khan, Nadeem Hassan Asif, Hussain Hamid, Shahid Abbas and Abdullah Sharif, the ultimate gross winner Mohsin Zafar proved to be a golfer of deeds, his excellent shot making dwarfing the prowess of players who tried their best to cow him down. Off the tees, on all par 4’s and 5’s, Mohsin never let go of his control and the tee shots were accuracy oriented and distance loaded. The blemishes did come here and there on the greens but then eleven pars in a round was an impressive performance and fetched him the title trophy.
The Royal Palm Club, in its endeavor to promote sports, held this event even in the absence of a sponsor and plans to continue holding regular competitive events not only in the golfing arena but also in cricket, football, tennis and squash. In this monthly golf event the participation was large indeed and while the top performer was Mohsin, others who performed well were Abbas Ali Khan, winner of runner-up slot in gross section, Mahdi Zafar, a teenager and winner of net first slot with a net score of 73, and his runner-up mate being Imran Miraj. The prize winners in handicap category above 15 were Ale Imran (first gross), Naseer Akhter (second gross), Kamran Butt (first net) and Silal Ahmed (second net). At the conclusion of the tournament, Lt Gen Muhammed Tariq, captain of Royal Palm Golf Club, awarded prizes to the winners – Dailytimes
