KARACHI: The Sindh government has raised the minimum wages of adult unskilled and juvenile workers employed in industrial and commercial units in the province to Rs 7,000 per month.In this regard, a notification was issued by the Sindh Labour Department here on Wednesday elaborating that the new minimum wage rates would be effective from July 1, 2010.The notification said this step has been taken in accordance with the announcement of the prime minister on May 1, 2010, enhancing wages of unskilled workers from Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 per month.Since this matter had become a provincial subject after the approval of the 18th Amendment in the Constitution the Sindh chief minister has accorded an approval to the proposal made in a summary regarding rising of minimum wage rates. The matter was then sent to Sindh Minimum Wage Board, which has also recommended the same minimum wage rate.
The board, in its recommendations, has said that the wage will apply to all adult unskilled and juvenile workers employed in all industrial and commercial units as per provision of Minimum Wages Ordinance of 1961, in the entire Sindh province.The notification further said that all wages would be paid to the employees through cross cheque or bank transfer.Meanwhile, Provincial Minister for Labour Ameer Nawab Khan has welcomed the announcement of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani for enhancing the wages of unskilled workers to Rs 7,000 per month.In his statement issued here on Wednesday, the minister while congratulating President Asif Ali Zardari,

Gilani and Asfand Yar Wali said, the enhancement in wages of unskilled workers would help in reducing their problems and they would be able to meet their daily life expenses.The present democratic government was serious to solve the problems of the people and enhancement in wages was a clear proof of the government’s friendly attitude. He directed the private sector to follow the orders of the prime minister.He said that the government was working on solid basis to redress the problems of the people because the prosperity of the people is the prosperity of the country – Dailytimes
