This statement left me shocked for a while and since then I couldn’t stop thinking about what direction are we really heading to? Why are we being dependent on something as dangerous as drugs? Why do we end up taking drugs rather than bowing down in front of our Lord, when we want peace of mind? In the recent past, almost all of us have noticed the increasing popularity of drugs among the youth. A large portion of our young generation is using drugs everyday which is quite alarming. All of us have even thought about what are the causes behind the popularity of drugs. According to my point of view, some youngsters become habitual of it due to peer pressure. Others use drugs to be the center of attention of their group of friends or to feel pleasure, while others use them to relive stress and depression. Not just university students but students of colleges and schools are also under the influence of this social evil.

There is a lot of buying and selling of drugs going on in many schools, colleges and universities where the buyers and sellers, both are students. Few years back, no one openly talked about drugs and the harmful effects they have. Now that they are common and have done so much harm, I have seen some talk going on about the increasing popularity of drugs among Pakistanis, on the television, but there are still no awareness campaigns and seminars arranged to educate people that no matter how drugs sooth your mind for the time being, they have adverse effects that can harm you psychologically and physically. Habitual taking of drugs makes the person dependent on them to function properly. There are two types of drug dependence: physiological and psychological. Physiological dependence causes a person to rely on drug as it makes changes to the functions of his body whereas; psychological dependence affects a person emotionally and mentally.

Drugs not only alter a person’s behavior but also affect the normal brain activity and make it difficult for a person to make strong decisions. In a nutshell, the youth consists of 60% of the total population of Pakistan which is more than half of the entire population. Majority of the youth is using drugs and this cruel practice is not just affecting them psychologically and physiologically but also harming them socially and morally. Despite the drugs doing so much harm to the human body, they are still restricted to the two minute talks on news channels and no specific actions are being taken to ban them and to punish the people dealing with selling of drugs illegally. Factors that are responsible for drug availability include negligence of government, lawlessness and lack of anti-narcotics offices. Strict laws should be made by the government to ban illegal buying and selling of drugs. Anti-narcotics offices should be made in every city to keep a check. Immediate actions should be taken to ban drugs or else the day is not far when we will lose our youth in the hands of these illegal drugs.
